Abstract

Sign language is a language that utilizes hand, finger and lip movements to communicate. Sign language is widely used in the education of Special Schools (SLB) especially for persons with deaf and speech because it has limitations in listening and speaking. But in education is only taught manually by teachers. The role of multimedia is important in the present, especially in the field of special school education as a sign language recognition media for the deaf. The study aims to develop a multimedia interactive sign Language introduction for the deaf using an Android-based total communication approach. Thus, the application can be utilized by deaf persons whenever and wherever. The method used in this application development is the MDLC (Multimedia Development Life Cicle) method (Luter Sutopo, 2010) with the stages of concept, design, material colecting, assembly, testing, and distribution. Based on the results of the beta test conducted with the dissemination of the questionnaire against teachers who handle deaf children at the special School of Kartini Batam, the interactive multimedia application of sign Language introduction to the deaf child of Grade 1 special elementary school can help the child to add vocabulary. The result is the aspect of ease of the users 88.3%, aspect of view of 82.5% and education aspect 82.5% with the interval category is very good.
