- Abstract
Tennessee Williams is famous for his portraits of the southern gentlewomen. It is with these gentlewomen that a study of Tennessee Williams's plays must logically begin. This thesis is based on the typical examples of gentlewomen of Williams's major plays: The Glass Menagerie, A Streetcar Named Desire and Summer and Smoke. By analyzing the mind of the South and the character of its people, the thesis draws the conclusion that these gentlewomen are the embodiment of modern people and their predicament is exactly the same as that of the modern people.
