- Abstract
Liu Chenweng was a literary scholar and literary critic of the Song and Yuan dynasties, and is known as the “backbone of the Xin Genre”. 354 of his lyrics have survived, and their ideological content has a distinctive brand of the times, which is known as the “history of lyrics”. Liu Chenweng’s lyricism was heavily influenced by Xin Qiji, and his lyrics are bold and melancholic, but he also sometimes wrote light and gentle works. This article takes the text of Liu Chenweng’s Su Xi Lyrics as the main object of study, and explores Liu Chenweng’s views on Xin Qiji’s patriotic sentiments, his “word as lyric”, “scripture and history into lyric”, “vulgarity into elegance”, and his lyricism. He also analyses his creative characteristics, which are based on the mentality of a relic, the use of lyrics to preserve history, the sadness of content, the incorporation of euphemistic techniques, and the combination of white description and metaphor.
