Gandrung Dance as Cultural Identity in Image Construction of Banyuwangi Regency, East Java

- Abstract
Nowadays many regions are faced with competition to attract tourists, in-vestments, and residents as well as many other purposes that could drive the development of the region. It is considered important for a region to have identity as differentiatior from other regions that could become the direction of planning and implementing various kinds of actions to support the ac-complishment of the region’s vision. Banyuwangi Regency, East Java, is one of the regions that form its identity by utilizing the regional notable cul-tural assets in the form of dance. The formation of Gandrung dance as Banyuwangi identity is not an easy process given that there are many other regions with similar potential and development. Based on those problems, thus the research question of this study is how Banyuwangi forms Gandrung dance as its regional identity, it is aimed to reveal the representa-tion form of the aesthetic orientation of Gandrung dance in the image con-struction of Banyuwangi. This study uses qualitative paradigm with phe-nomenological approach. The data collection was carried out through in-depth interview, participant observation as well as document search, and the data analysis was made using matrix analysis model. The results of the study revealed that Gandrung dance has become Banyuwangi identity which was formed through the activities of image communication by transforming Gandrung dance into visual identity that was applied to various visua com-munication media. The results of this study are useful for regional planners and other regional stakeholders in establishing the image of their region through the use of the notable cultural assets owned by the region
