Abstract

A surge in demand for logistic services is resulted from the rising demand of manufacturing, food and beverages and perishable products, and the people’s online purchasing lifestyle in Malaysia. Despite the bright future of the logistics sector, however, the sector only accounted for 3.7% of total employment in Malaysia which the current manpower is incompatible to fulfill the demand of the sector. Inevitably, Malaysia will continue to face labour shortages in this sector. Undeniably, effective human resource management plays an important role in enhancing employees’ job satisfaction which would eventually attract more young talents into this industry to mitigate potential operation disruption due to labor shortages. This case study aims to unveil a well-established Malaysian logistics company’s human resource management policies and practices particularly in the development of sustainable human resources to enhance the company’s operation effectiveness, reduce operation risks, and conserving a pool of talents to cater the increased demand in the nation’s logistic industry. In addition, this case study employs a qualitative approach by interviewing the company’s management team with open-ended questions. This case study successfully reveals the unique human resource management adopted by the company which inculcates the value of corporate social responsibility to reflect the company’s successor’s social entrepreneurial spirit. Furthermore, this case study also elaborates the community engagement initiatives taken by the company to attract those house-wives who live within the company’s parameter. Additionally, this case study also reveals the initiatives taken by the company in taking care the community’s wellbeing as well as its workforce. The relentless efforts demonstrated by the company in the realm of corporate citizenship is also being exhibited in the case study in order to create cost effective employment opportunity coupled with high commitment in social concerns. Ostensibly, the findings of this case study provide an avenue for the nation’s logistic companies to build a healthy workforce, create a sound society impact and portray a positive employment image based on sustainable human resource.
