- Abstract
Asia’s rapid growth in the commercial aviation sector in recent decades has positioned the region as the largest and fastest-growing one in the world. However, aviation infrastructure in this region is struggling to keep pace with this growth, with many airports operating above their planned capacity, resulting in many new airports and upgrading projects in the next 5 years. In the face of challenges such as the operation of New Large Aircrafts(NLAs) and increased air traffic volumes, existing bituminous material requirements are lagging the expectations from airport designer, consultants and operator/management teams. This paper analyzes and compares the requirements between bituminous materials applied for airfields and normal highways. It also shares real-life examples of the application of high performance as well as fit-for-function Polymer Modified Bitumen (PMB) in several regional airports. This paper concludes with proposals for new technical specifications that consider the specific climatic conditions for airport projects in the Asia Pacific region
